Abstract

This research is motivated by the low mathematics ability of third-grade students at MI Muslimin Mande, especially in solving problems related to integers. The students’ average score has not yet reached the Minimum Mastery Criteria (KKM). Students experience difficulties in understanding word problems and determining appropriate solution steps. To overcome this, the Problem Based Learning (PBL) model is used, which is believed to develop students’ critical thinking and problem-solving skills. According to Polya’s theory, the problem-solving process involves four stages: understanding the problem, devising a plan, carrying out the plan, and looking back to check the results. This study uses a quantitative approach with a quasi-experimental method and a Nonequivalent Control Group Design. Class 3A was used as the experimental group, while Class 3B was the control group. The results showed an increase in the average score in the experimental class from 49.46 to 81.14 with an N-Gain of 0.62, which is in the moderate category, and in the control class from 48.60 to 69.20 with an N-Gain of 0.39, which is in the low category. The Mann-Whitney test indicated a significant difference, so the PBL model is considered effective in improving mathematical problem-solving skills.
